John Innes Seed and Potting Composts

J.I. type Seed Compost

2 parts by volume (bulk) sterilised medium loam (¼ “ sieve)

2 part by volume milled peat

1 part by volume coarse horticultural sand

Add to each bushel (8 gallons, 36 litres) the following fertiliser:

1½ oz (42gms). Superphosphate

¾ oz.(21gms) ground chalk or whiting

J.I. Potting Compost No. 1 (for pricking off seedlings or first potting)

7 parts by volume (bulk) sterilised medium loam (½ “ sieve)

3 parts by volume milled peat

2 parts by volume coarse horticultural sand

Then add: 0.6gms per litre ground limestone (0.6kg per cubic metre) 3gms per litre John Innes Base fertiliser (3kg per cubic metre) 

J.I. Potting Compost No. 2 (for second potting-on)
As for John Innes Potting compost No. 1

Then add:1.2gms per litre ground limestone (1.2kg per cubic metre) 6gms per litre John Innes Base fertiliser (6kg per cubic metre)

J.I. Potting Compost No. 3 (for final potting-on)
As for John Innes Potting compost No. 1

Then add: 1.8gms per litre ground limestone (1.8kg per cubicmetre) 9gms per litre John Innes Base fertiliser (9kg per cubic metre) 

J I. Potting Compost for lime-hating plants (ericaceous compost)
3 parts by volume horticultural peat

1 part by volume sterilised medium loam

2 parts by volume coarse horticultural sand

.Then add: 3gms per litre John Innes Base fertiliser (3kg per cubic metre) 

J.I. Potting Compost for Cuttings

1 part by volume sterilised medium loam

2 parts by volume horticultural peat

3 parts by volume coarse sterilised horticultural sand

Add no fertilisers - they will inhibit root formation.
